Speech to Speech (STS)

Speech-to-Speech (STS) helps people with speech disabilities make phone calls and allows you to voice for yourself. A specially trained relay operator repeats your words to the other person. You do not need special equipment to use this service. You simply say and clearly re-voice your words so the other person can understand.

Dial 711 or 877-826-6607

No more missed calls because someone doesn't know when and where to reach you!

Registering your contact information is an easy way to inform people who call you about when and where to reach you.

How Does STS Work?

STS ensures that people with speech disabilities, including you, can make calls more easily and be clearly understood, providing equal access to telephone communication.

1

Dial 711 or 1-877-826-6607 to connect with an STS relay number, and you can do this using a regular telephone.

2

A specially trained Communication Assistant (CA) joins the call and helps you be understood.

3

The person with a speech disability speaks directly, and you speak in your own voice while the CA re-voices your words if needed.

4

The relay operator repeats the words to the other party. You hear them just like a regular phone call.

5

You send and receive messages normally, and you hear the other person's responses verbally and you can hear them, just like a regular call. However, the CA's voice is heard or voiceless depending on having only the CA's voice heard or emailing out details ahead of time.

FAQs

We want to simplify your life. In the following you see answers to some questions that might arise.

What are STS Retained Messages?

The Relay Texas STS retained message feature allows the relay agent to record and retain messages for the STS user for 24 hours. This feature supports the STS user when reaching a busy signal or voicemail is not available.

How does the STS Email Call Set Up feature work?

With Email Call Set Up, STS users can email Relay Texas at least two hours before a call. You include your phone number or customer profile information and instructions for the call. Then you dial the STS number and tell the relay operator to use your Email Call Set Up, and the operator follows your instructions and connects the call.

How does STS Contact Information Registration help people reach me?

Registering your contact information allows people to reach you by calling the STS number and providing your name and password. The relay operator will look up your contact information and hours of availability to connect the call.

Can I request a specific STS relay operator?

No, we cannot accept requests for specific relay operators.

Is this information confidential?

Yes, the information in your Call Set Up Email will be used only to assist you in processing calls. This information is automatically deleted after 24 hours of being entered.

Can the STS relay operator make calls or leave messages for me without me calling in?

Federal and state regulations require that we help in real time; therefore, we cannot make calls for you, unless you are on the phone.
